OVERVIEW

Disney*Pixar was searching for new ways to market products based on their incredibly successful properties, specifically outside of theatrical windows. By 2013 they had a robust collection of 7 films with beloved characters, but some hadn't been in theaters in years. By grouping them together as a franchise, like Disney saw with the success of it’s Princess and Marvel groupings, they could breathe new life to titles in the retail environment.

THE concept

How could we showcase the Pixar movies, led by their beloved characters, in a successful grouped setting? Disney*Pixar had stipulations that characters from each movie could not "interact" with each other, so I created a developed key art and a logo that enabled the characters to live in a single space, while retaining their individual characteristics. Though simple, the solution allowed future films to fit into the design as they were rolled out. It also provided a flexibility to group certain films together as needed.

The agency I worked for was specifically hired to design the key art and develop a pitch deck. This would then be presented to the head of Disney*Pixar for sign off on this marketing idea. Taking it a step further, we printed and bound the book with a metal cover, creating a truly special and impactful presentation.

Some of the creative solutions we were tasked with included envisioning the retail environment, designing custom patterns and products, and exploring opportunities for multiple price points.

STYLE guide

The presentation was so well-received that Disney*Pixar, instead of taking the concept art and designing it in-house, chose to use the artwork as is. Subsequently, our agency was tasked with creating the packaging style guide to serve as the blueprint for bringing this new property to retail. The Disney*Pixar-branded packaging was implemented and can now be found on products today.
